Ramadan - a Month of Fasting and Special Food

1 day, Muhammad was sitting alone within the wilderness near Mecca, when Angel Gabriel appeared before him. For the following 10 days, the Angel taught him verses from the Quran, that he memorized. Islamic scholars feel that the first revelation occurred around the 27th evening of Ramadan. This night is thus called Laylat-at-Qadr - Evening of Power. According to the Quran, this is when God determines the course of the world for the following year.

Ramadan, the 9th month in the Moslem calendar, is a time when Moslems focus on their faith and spend less time on the concerns of their everyday lives. It is a time of contemplation and worship.

Throughout Ramadan, Moslems fast the entire month. This is called the Fast of Ramadan. During this period, strict restraints are placed in the lives of Moslems. They are not permitted to drink or eat during the daylight hours. At the conclusion of your day, the fast is broken with prayer along with a meal referred to as iftar. Later in the day after the iftar it really is customary for Moslems to travel out visiting family and friends.

For iftar, the meal prepared is pretty unusual and appears almost only during Ramadan. Iftar starts off with dates, in imitation of the things the Prophet ate during the iftar from the first Fast of Ramadan. Then kanji is served. This is different towards the kanji that Sri Lankans normally enjoy. Spices and herbs and often chicken or beef is included in this kanji, causeing this to be almost food by itself.

A few of the other dishes found throughout this month are surtapam - rolled pancakes with panipol (grated coconut mixed with treacle and lightly spiced with cardamoms), pillawoos - crunchy, deep-fried banana batter, drizzled with treacle, ada - soft, juggery cakes, addukku Roti - layers of pancakes using a minced beef or chicken filling, baked within a pastry covering, pastol - rice flour and coconut patty with tripe filling and al-basara - shredded beef or chicken with semolina and baked just like a cake.

If the fast ends (the 1st day of the month of Shawwal) it is celebrated within a holiday called Id-al-Fitr - the Feast of Fast Breaking. Gifts are exchanged. family and Friends gather to pray in congregation and then for large meals. Buffet Ramadhan Casa Ombak
